Description
Openlab, the London-based open source art and technology collective, presents a series of in-depth summer workshops exploring creating and hacking media using free software and tools.  Workshops will include both beginner and advanced instruction in such software as PureData, Processing, and SuperCollider, as well as using the microcontroller Arduino, general sound hardware hacking, and more.

Brief:
Regular events consisting of (paid) workshops created and run by venerable Openlabbers.  A limited number of workshops for short (nightly) events (2 to 3), with longer format events on weekends. Locations will alternate between places -  TheRoebuck (Borough), SpaceStudios (Hackney), DeckSpace? (Greenwich), CafeOTO?(? No response to Evan) (Dalston), Area10MediaLab? (Peckham). feel free to add more...

The goal is to (eventually) become collectively financially self-sustaining while promoting open source and open processes.

Guidelines:
Any Openlabber can organize an event, but documentation should be on the web (somewhere accessible).  Workshop content should all be open source (if software-based) or open process (if not strictly about software).  Workshop organizers get 10% total take for their part in organizing, everyone else splits the rest evenly.

Cost:
Suggested £10 per workshop individually, or something less than the sum of each for the entire night.

Proposed workshop topics:
- EvanR : Processing for Visual Artists, from intro to expert (series of topics)
- EvanR : OpenFrameWorks?
- EvanR : Fluxus
- Evan's friend Daniel : Arduino (topics TBD)
- RobC : pure:dyne topics - basic intro to the OS, puredata, audiotools, videotools, photographic tools, streaming... bla bla bla...
- DaveG : fluxus
- RyanJ : hardware noise hacking
- AndyF : Sound design (Csound or Pd)
- AndyF : Music composition (Csound or Pd)
- AndyF : Effect or synth design (Csound or Pd)
- someone : basic soldering ?
- dans : SuperCollider
- robm : Using JOGL/GLSL with Processing
- robm : Android programming for art projects.
- robm : Using RoseGarden? with PD.
- jag  : Understanding sound and music by programming computers (C/C++/portaudio, GNU/Linux).
- IliasB: Perform live with your Processing visuals, using Mother and PureData. (Processing, Mother, OSC, Pd). Windows only. www.onar3d.com/mother.
- JakeR : Inkscape - intro to vector graphics
- JakeR : The GIMP - intro to bitmap graphics, basic principles and operations (resizing, cropping, retouching)
- JakeR : Scribus - intro to DTP! How To Make A Poster.
- JakeR : Joomla! - how to make a quick and dirty web site
- JakeR : HTML & CSS - Markup for Mortals

Definite Events:

Event 1
Run by EvanR, at TheRoebuck - Last Tuesday of every month, 6-11pm, starting June 30

Tues 30/6

Cost: £15 for the entire night, or per workshop (NOTE: we'll need to mark/stamp hands)

1) Introduction to SuperCollider with DanStowell - £10
SuperCollider is an incredible environment and programming language for music and audio. In this 2-hour introductory session we will get started with SuperCollider, using it for synthesis and digital signal processing, as well as creating musical patterns and generative audio.
All welcome, although some prior programming experience would definitely be helpful. Bring a laptop, and please install SuperCollider (latest version 3.3, ideally) on it beforehand.

2) Hardware Noise Hacking with Ryan Jordan - £5
Ryan Jordan, veteran noise artist and organizer of the successful NOISE==NOISE performance series presents an introduction to making sounds with basic circuitry.  All participants will be making sounds by the end of the 1-hr workshop. No previous experience required.

3) Processing for Visual Artists with EvanR - £10
Processing is fast becoming the tool of choice for interactive artists and designers looking to add some visual complexity and user interaction to their work, from music videos to interactive kiosks and print graphics.  This 2-hour workshop is the first in a series of summer workshops, gently introducing Processing from the beginning and focusing on basic techniques for drawing on the screen.  No experience required. Please bring a laptop and download Processing (http://processing.org) prior to the workshop. Taught by lecturer and visual performance artist Evan Raskob (http://pixelist.info).

Tues 28/7

1) Introducing the Arduino with DanielHirschman? - £10
2) Processing for Visual Artists with EvanR - £10
Processing is fast becoming the tool of choice for interactive artists and designers looking to add some visual complexity and user interaction to their work, from music videos to interactive kiosks and print graphics.  This 2-hour workshop is the second in a series of summer workshops, focusing on the basics of programming: performing repetitive tasks like drawing, easily; handling user interactions such as the mouse and keyboard; and more.  A very basic familiarity with Processing is suggested for participants.  Please bring a laptop and download Processing (http://processing.org) prior to the workshop. Taught by lecturer and visual performance artist Evan Raskob (http://pixelist.info).

Tues 25/8

1) Introduction to SuperCollider (part 2) with DanStowell - £10
Dan will continue the introduction to SuperCollider, building on the basics to create reusable synths and use them in musical patterns, including pre-defined patterns and generative music. Depending on time and interest we may also look at other topics such as handling audio files.
This 2-hour workshop is the second in a series of summer workshops, but if you weren't at the first workshop then you'll probably be OK to follow if you already have some experience of SuperCollider or if you're already comfortable with programming languages.
You'll need a laptop with SuperCollider 3.3 or 3.3.1 installed (download).

2) Android Introduction - £10
Rob Munro will take students through the install process of the development environment, Linux and Windows and are preferred, but the process should be similar on Mac as well.
After the install we will looks at some the basics of android development, the android manifest file, Activities, Services & Databasing as time will allow.
This will be a 2-hour workshop, some Java experience will be very helpful though not essential. An android phone will handy as well but the emulator is included in the install.

RedArtCafe?, Dalston: mid August (To Be confirmed...)

1) Introduction to Inkscape with Jake Rayson
Inkscape is a vector graphics drawing program, used for creating illustrations, layouts and logos. It is an exquisitely crafted application, fully-featured without being bloated and a joy to use. Come with laptops loaded with Inkscape 0.46, a fistful of fonts, and minds brimming with graphic desires. I'll  demonstrate fundamental vector drawing principles (bezier curves, compound paths, transformations, fills etc.) and how to apply them to bring your ideas to fruition.
